Type your letters, and this anagram solver shows every word they make. It can split them into phrases too. DORMITORY comes back as DIRTY ROOM. SCHOOLMASTER becomes THE CLASSROOM. Many solvers stop at single words. This one also gives you a letter bench for working it out by hand, plus a hint ladder when you only want a nudge.

Multiple Word Anagram Solver

Solving phrases is much harder than it looks. The tool picks a word, takes away its letters, then searches what is left. The combinations multiply fast.
Two-letter fillers are the worst part, because AN, AT and IT can be shuffled into the gaps forever. So the results are sorted with care. Phrases with the fewest words come first, then those with the longest single word, then those built from the most common words. That last step matters more than it sounds. Without it, DORMITORY would lead with TORRID YOM and DORMY ROTI, and DIRTY ROOM would be buried underneath. A two word anagram solver is not unique, but one that sorts its phrases this way is still uncommon.

Which Words Does the Anagram Unscrambler Allow?

You choose, from three word lists. Every anagram unscrambler runs on a list, and a full dictionary returns words nobody would accept. Crossword fans say it plainly: the list has to be trimmed before the answers look familiar.

Word listWhat it includes
Common words (default)42,949 everyday words. It keeps TINSEL and CLASSROOM, and drops ANTRES, DORMY and CHELATOR.
Plus surnamesAdds the 5,000 most common US surnames, from public Census data
Whole dictionaryEvery word in the list, including plenty a game will reject

Behind all three sits Re-Enable, the clean, MIT-licensed edition of the ENABLE list. Its full dictionary runs past 172,000 entries, and the whole thing is public.
Click any answer for more. You will see the other words those letters spell, whether the word is in everyday use, and a link to look it up.

How to Solve an Anagram Yourself

Plenty of people would rather crack it themselves. Some even feel a solver is cheating. So there are two ways here to stop short of the answer. The letter bench gives you one tile per letter. Drag them, shuffle them, sort them. It is the old paper-squares trick from exam halls, minus the scissors. Click a tile, and it locks in place through every shuffle. Crossword solvers ask for this more than anything. You already know some letters from the crossing answers, so you only want the rest to move. The hint ladder goes one rung at a time:

  • How many words, and how long each one is
  • The first letters
  • The first half of the answer
  • The full answer

Stop on whichever rung you need.

How do you spot a chunk instead of solving the whole thing?

Look for a familiar fragment, then build outward from it. Nobody solves a long anagram by trying every order of every letter. Example: Scrambled as YCOOLOGIS, SOCIOLOGY looks impossible. Then you notice O,L, O, G and Y and think OLOGY. Now you know it is a subject, and the rest falls into place.
The tool flags fragments like this above the results. OLOGY, TION, MENT and NESS are among about thirty it looks for. Under time pressure, this beats brute force. If the puzzle gives you categories, test those against the letters before you start solving. With YCOOLOGIS, a continent has no chance. A
school subject does.

Anagram Solver With Names

Name anagrams have a loyal following, and this anagram solver will try them once you switch on the surname list. Keep your hopes modest, though.
Names are not built from English word fragments, so most give nothing readable. Turning surnames on also has a cost. DORMITORY stops leading with DIRTY ROOM and leads with TORRID MOY instead, where MOY is a surname you have never met. About a fifth of the most common surnames are already ordinary words, so the extra list adds more noise than reach. Use it on a name. Leave it off for everything else.

Is There a Solver for GamePigeon Anagrams?

No, because Anagrams in GamePigeon is a different kind of game. You play it inside iMessage against another person, with a timer running. It shares nothing mechanically with unscrambling a fixed set of letters, even though people search for a solver by name. Switching apps mid-round ends that game too, the same trap our Word Hunt solver page explains. If your letters sit in a grid rather than a row, you need a different tool. Anagram Solver FAQs

Can it find phrases of more than one word?

Yes. Choose Phrase and set how many words to allow. Two is fastest and usually what people want. Four gets noisy on long inputs.

Why does it not show every possible word?

Because the common words filter is on by default. A full dictionary returns entries most people would reject. Switch to Whole dictionary, and everything appears.

Does it handle blanks?

Yes, type ? for each unknown letter. SILEN? finds every six-letter word that uses those five letters plus one more.

Can I check whether two words or phrases are anagrams?

Yes, with the two boxes at the bottom of the tool. It only compares letters, so "dirty room" against DORMITORY comes back as a match. It is worth checking famous examples. One widely shared pair, PUNISHMENTS and NINE THUMPS, has eleven letters on one side and ten on the other.

Is this anagram solver free?

Yes, completely. It works in any browser, needs no sign-up or install, and you can unscramble as many sets of letters as you like.

What to Do If Nothing Comes Back

  • 1. Check the letter count under the box. A stray character is easy to miss, though spaces and punctuation are ignored, so you can paste a whole phrase.
  • 2. Widen the word list. Common words is narrow on purpose.
  • 3.Allow more words in Phrase mode, or lower the shortest word setting. A three-letter minimum blocks phrases that need A or AN, and some real answers do.

Still nothing? Your letters may simply not make anything. That happens more than you might expect, especially with names.
